How to close a cushion (Slip stitch)

I was asked “how do you close your cushion once it’s done? What’s a slip stitch?”. So instead of trying to explain with descriptions… I took pictures.

First, choose a thread as close as possible from the fabric colour. I usually just choose in my DMC threads. You could use any thread if you are confident enough of the size and regularity of your sewing, but I wouldn’t recommand it.
Use a pointy sewing needle, make a knot at the end of your thread.
This is what your opening should look like. After sewing the cushion, when you turn it back to the right sides out, iron it with the edges of the opening turned back in, so that you get a straight line.
Pin the 2 sides together so that you have a clear view of where to sew next.
Start from the inside so that the knot at the end of the thread is incased in the cushion.
Other view of the know before pulling it in.
Let’s stop a minute and observe how the sewing threads from the sewing machine look like now. If you pull lightly you will see a “ladder” between the 2 sewn fabrics. That’s what you want to mimick.
Push the needle through both fabric (take only a few threads from the fabric, and stay at the edge). The visible part of the thread is vertical (hence the ladder) and you push diagonally for the next stitch. Refer to picture.

Do that all the way, push the sewing machine threads in and voila !
