Today we will make a drawstring bag for a portable Daylight lamp. Because it’s intended to carry the lamp around and travel, there are quite a few thick layers.
The dimensions mentionned here are for that particular lamp, but you can adapt this method to any size you want.
First, let’s see the materials. You will need 2 pieces of fabric the same size (here 45×45 cm. For extra protection, the inside fabric is fleece).
A stitched piece.
A piece of padding a bit smaller than the 2 pieces of fabric.
And your regular sewing kit.

First we will sew the design onto the outside fabric,
using the deco cushion method.

Align both fabrics front to front, and sew the side on top of the design at 1cm of the edge (that’s where the cord and opining will be)

Turn things over and align the fabrics the way they should be. We will now make the hole for the cord. Traditionnally many peole just sew a line and slide the cord afterwards. As there is quite a distance, I chose to encase the cord directly before sewing.

Now a bit of tricky thing. To avoid sewing into the cord, I pin it down all along. I encase the cord in the fold of the front fabric (if you do it between the 2 folds of the fabrics, you are against the sewn line, it might be less practical to slide the cord with time). Check that the cord is sliding easily in the tube you made with the pins.

Sew the tube , leaving about 1 cm for the cord

Time to include the padding between the 2 fabrics. Pin everything down, keeping them aligned.

Fold in 2, inside facing out. Check fabric alignement, and cut excess fabric if needed. Sew on the bottom and the side at 1cm from the edge.

Turn the bag upside down and voila ! A bag for your lamp ! Now we will make an extra optional step to get a squared bottom. See the bit of fabric sticking out of the bottom. It’s not that nice looking, plus it’s not really stable for the lamp…

With the lamp still inside (or any squared thing you want), push the corners inside the bag, and pin down perpendicular to the sewing line.

Turn the bag over, and sew a line alongside the pin, forming a triangle. I did this by hand.

And this is what it looks like in the end !

And the bag is done ! Enjoy !
